Can I drive with grinding breaks?
If you are noticing grinding or slow-to-stop brakes on your truck, it is not advisable to drive and they should be fixed as soon as possible. In cars, it can be fine for a few days, however, as trucks are larger and naturally take longer to come to a stop, you are putting yourself and others at risk.
Is it safe to drive with a broken suspension?
The suspension helps to absorb bounces from bumps in the road and is also important for accurate steering. If your suspension is damaged, broken, or missing, can lead to a very uncomfortable drive for yourself and your passengers, put any cargo inside at risk of damage and can lead to your truck feeling unbalanced and easy to lose control.
What are the most commonly replaced truck parts?
No matter how well you maintain your truck, parts will always need replacing due to frequent vehicle usage or just general wear and tear. Below are the most common truck parts that need replacing:
- Brakes - as semi-trucks are heavier than standard vehicles, there is more force and weight applied to the brakes and typically need replacing after three to five years.
- Clutch - again, due to the size and weight of semi-trucks, they wear down the clutch faster than standard vehicles and should last around 200,000 miles, however, this does change depending on usage.
- Tires - even the most durable truck tires are not built to last forever and will naturally degrade after constant usage.
- Headlights - as long-haul journeys are more likely to be driving at night, headlight malfunctions are more frequent than in stand vehicles. If you notice any flickering or burnout, you should fix or replace it before setting off on your journey.
- Mirrors - dirt, gravel and rocks bouncing up from the road can easily scratch and break side mirrors.
